Gatherings - retreats - courses

A ROOM OF YOUR OWN

Want some peace to do some writing?

Broomfield Hall is a space where you can get away from your daily routine, find some headspace and work on your writing. Situated twenty minutes from the M5 it's a secluded place surrounded by oak trees and with walks on the Quantock Hills.

The retreats are hosted by a published writer of over a dozen non-fiction books who appreciates how difficult it can be to find the headspace to finish your project.

A  spacious Georgian house with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in Somerset’s Quantock Hills.

All writers welcome

Whether you are just starting out or trying to finish a book; whether you are working on a novel or short stories, non-fiction or poetry, your thesis or next Big Idea, anyone who wants time and space is welcome.

We will provide you with

  • Two three-hour dedicated writing sessions per day

  • Daily, non-compulsory evening discussion groups lead by Brigid

  • Meals and snacks (feel free to bring wine!)

  • We cook – good quality, home-made vegetarian food - so you don’t have to.

  • A private room with a table for writing (although friends/ partners welcome for a supplement).

  • Like-minded company if you want a break

  • Walks and conversations with other writers if you feel like it.

  • TV and DVD for those who want to escape into another story at the end of the day. Or just sit by a bonfire under the stars…

How to Get to Us

If you are driving from the London direction we are twenty minutes from Junction 23 on the M5 at Bridgwater, or if you

are coming from the West, take Junction 24. If you prefer the train, Taunton is the most convenient station, while Berry’s coaches do a ‘superfast’ service from Hammersmith to Bridgwater. We will do our best to collect you when you arrive.

Local Food and Drink

If you want to venture out for food or drinks, good food is available from a number of Quantock pubs including The Lamb in Spaxton  (two miles away), The Blue Ball in Triscombe and at the Carew Arms in Crowcombe. Best to ring in advance and book. Local cafes in the Quantocks which our friends recommend include the Foxy Bean near Over Stowey, and more upmarket restaurants are Podshavers and Clavelshay Barn. White Feather in Bridgwater by the River Parrett is great for coffee and lunch.

Our nearest shop is the Spaxton  Community Shop, two miles away.

"Many many books, and on every topic you might imagine. A meditative view east towards the moonrise... huge living spaces with wood burners, high ceilings, and buckets of rock and roll history."

— Vicki

“I had such a productive writer's retreat! Brigid's support and helpful advice, along with the peace and beautiful surroundings of Broomfield were an inspiration. The novel I'm writing has benefited enormously from this experience”

—Katherine
